Hawks Shutout Yorktown in Battle of District Unbeatens The Hayfield Hawks solidified their position as the team to beat in the AAA National District with a 2-0 shutout of the Yorktown Patriots on Wednesday night. Sophomore pitcher Amber Fowler baffled the high scoring Patriot lineup all game long, scattering four hits and striking out six in the contest. Fowler displayed pinpoint control, and didn’t walk a single batter in the game. She was backed by stellar defense including a diving stop in the sixth by Megan Perry-Shifflett at short to hold Charlotte Batdorf to an infield single. That play led to a rally-******* double play started by 3B Taylor Neuhart.
Yorktown’s Kate Bauman also pitched an excellent game. The Hawks only managed three singles by Sam Perry-Shifflett, Fowler and Hannah Williams, but Hayfield’s five walks and aggressive speed on the bases led to runs in the first and third innings. Sam Perry-Shifflett singled and scored in the first, and Williams stole three bases, including a swipe of home in the third, to give Fowler all the support she would need.
The Hawks move to 9-1 (6-0 National) on the year, and will next face the Bishop Ireton Cardinals and Jefferson Colonials on Saturday April 17th as they wrap up play in the NoVa Spring Break Softball Tournament.
